Web developer? Want to turn off or disable the cache in Firefox for testing? Well, by default you can’t – but there is an easy solution!

Grab a copy of the excellent Web Developer Toolbar (if you don’t have it already – reviewed here) extension for Firefox. On the far left-hand side you will find the ‘Disable’ menu. The top option will be ‘Disable Cache’. Tick that option and away you go – cache turned off!

I spent a fair while Googling for a solution to this before stumbling across the answer: turn your printer off and back on. That’s it. No reinstalling drivers, adding or removing printers or playing with settings – just a good old fashioned power cycle. It’s nice to know some things never change

Hat tip to Walt-O-Matic for the answer.

I was printing from Microsoft Office Word, via a networked HP C4480 printer on Windows Server 2008 via an Airport Extreme.

..then salvation is at hand.

Mac OS X Leopard Perl

The problem (in most cases) is that files are missing from the 5.8.8 Perl installation and are present in the older 5.8.6 version. To correct the error you simply need to copy the files from the 5.8.6 directory to the 5.8.8 dir. Execute the following command as root or using sudo:

cp /System/Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/*
/System/Library/Perl/5.8.8/darwin-thread-multi-2level/CORE/

You should then be able to install Perl modules happily.

I encountered a strange error today while I was developing a document repository website in a Windows Server/IIS environment. When I pointed my browser at myfile.docx it returned a 404 error, but other files in the same directory were served correctly. After some Googling, I discovered that Microsoft’s IIS only allows the download of files that are in a list of predefined types as a security measure. To be able to download Office 2007 files from IIS you need to add the extension/MIME type pairs to the IIS configuration.

There are 2 ways to achieve our goal of accessing Office 2007 files via the browser:

Add the Office File Extensions in IIS

Open IIS

Right-click on the website profile and select Properties from the menu

Goto the HTTP Headers tab

Click on the MIME Types button at the bottom of the dialog

Click New

Add the File Extensions and MIME Types you require from the list at the bottom of this post

or alternatively, you can

Edit the Metabase Configuration File

Stop IIS

Open C:/Windows/system32/inetsrv/metabase.xml

Search for
IIsMimeMap

Add the list of MIME types below to the end of the list

Restart IIS

Office 2007 Document MIME Types
